Losing 50â100 hairs per day is considered normal. But when you're finding clumps on your pillow, in the shower drain, or on your hairbrush â it signals an internal imbalance that needs attention. Hair fall is not a scalp problem. It is a whole-body problem that happens to show up on your scalp.
In Ayurveda, hair fall is called Khalitya and is primarily a Pitta-dominant disorder, though Vata and Kapha can also be involved. Understanding which dosha is causing your hair fall is the key to choosing the right treatment.
The Three Types of Hair Fall (by Dosha)
ðī Pitta-Type Hair Fall (Most Common)
Signs: Thinning from the crown or temples, premature greying, oily scalp, burning sensation on scalp, dandruff with itching. Cause: Excess heat, stress, spicy food, alcohol, sun exposure.
ðĻ Vata-Type Hair Fall
Signs: Dry, frizzy, brittle hair, diffuse thinning all over, dandruff without itching, split ends. Cause: Dryness, irregular eating, stress, cold/dry climate, excessive exercise.
ð Kapha-Type Hair Fall
Signs: Oily, heavy hair, sticky dandruff, scalp feels clogged or congested. Cause: Heavy oily diet, sedentary lifestyle, excess dairy and sugar.
ðĄ Key Insight: Most modern hair products target the scalp externally â but Ayurveda treats the internal root cause. A Pitta-type patient using a cooling herb will heal faster than anyone using the most expensive external shampoo.
5 Proven Ayurvedic Herbs for Hair Fall
ðŋ Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) â The King of Hair
Bhringraj is the single most important Ayurvedic herb for hair. It nourishes hair roots (follicles), reduces Pitta heat causing hair fall, prevents premature greying, and stimulates new hair growth. Use internally as churna (powder) AND externally as Bhringraj oil for maximum results. Take Â― tsp powder with warm water at bedtime.
ð Amla (Amalaki) â The Hair Tonic
The highest source of Vitamin C in nature â Amla strengthens hair follicles, acts as a powerful antioxidant against scalp oxidative stress, and deeply nourishes hair from within. It is also an excellent Pitta pacifier. Consume 1 tsp powder with honey every morning OR apply Amla oil to scalp twice weekly.
ðą Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) â The Stress Buster
Stress is one of the biggest triggers of Pitta-type hair fall. Brahmi calms the nervous system, reduces cortisol levels, improves sleep quality, and directly nourishes hair roots. It is particularly effective for stress-induced hair thinning. Take 300mg Brahmi capsule or Â― tsp powder with warm milk at bedtime.
ðŧ Sesame Oil (Til Taila) â The Scalp Nourisher
In Ayurveda, regular Shiro Abhyanga (head oil massage) is one of the most powerful treatments for hair fall. Warm sesame oil penetrates deeply, nourishes follicles, improves blood circulation to the scalp, and calms Vata. Warm 2 tbsp sesame oil, massage gently into scalp for 10 minutes, leave for 1 hour, then wash.
ðž Fenugreek (Methi) Seeds â The Follicle Strengthener
Rich in proteins, nicotinic acid, and lecithin â fenugreek directly strengthens hair follicles and prevents breakage. Soak 2 tbsp overnight, blend to a paste, apply to scalp for 30 minutes, then rinse. Do this twice weekly for 60 days.
Dietary Changes That Reduce Hair Fall
- Increase protein â dal, paneer, eggs, nuts (hair is made of keratin = protein)
- Eat Pitta-cooling foods â coconut, cucumber, amla, green leafy vegetables
- Reduce Pitta-aggravating foods â spicy, salty, oily, fried foods and alcohol
- Stay hydrated â 2.5â3 litres of water daily
- Add iron-rich foods â spinach, dates, pomegranate (iron deficiency is a major hair fall cause)
- Avoid crash dieting â sudden calorie restriction starves hair follicles
Daily Routine (Dinacharya) for Hair Health
- Wake up by 6:00 AM â late rising increases Kapha and sluggish circulation
- Oil massage scalp 2â3 times per week with Bhringraj or sesame oil
- Wash hair with mild herbal shampoo â avoid SLS and chemical shampoos
- Never tie wet hair tightly â this causes breakage
- Practice Pranayama (Anulom Vilom) for 10 minutes daily â reduces stress dramatically
- Sleep 7â8 hours â growth hormone for hair repair is released during sleep
